FamilySmart™ is about adults investing in young people and seeing them as assets
In June 2000, the F.O.R.C.E. Society for Kids’ Mental Health (the FORCE) became a registered non-profit organization. It was co-founded by 2 moms, Donna Murphy and Keli Anderson; one who lost her son to suicide, and the other wanting to keep her son alive. The F.O.R.C.E. Society for Kids’ Mental Health was founded as a provincial organization to provide families with an opportunity to speak with other families who understand and can offer support and/or information on services they know about and/or have accessed. The F.O.R.C.E. also developed tools and resources to assist both families and professionals supporting and assisting children and youth experiencing mental health challenges.
In February 2010, the National Institute of Families for Child & Youth Mental Health (Institute of Families) became a registered non-profit organization. It was co-founded by a mom, Keli Anderson, and a psychiatrist, Dr. Jana Davidson. Both came to know each other and saw the value in working together as families and service providers to enhance the mental health of children and youth. Together, they also founded FamilySmart™.
Five years later, on June 30, 2015, the FORCE officially joined with the National Institute of Families for Child & Youth Mental Health (Institute of Families). The FORCE and the Institute of Families had been aligned and partnered with each other on many initiatives over the years since the inception of the Institute of Families in 2010. The two organizations’ common values and goals for children, youth and their families with lived experience are entrenched in our cultures and are enhanced by our coming together.
The two organizations together are unified, committed and persistent in our efforts to ensure that child and youth mental health is a priority in our provinces, territories and nation; that children, youth and their families will feel supported, accepted and empowered; and that they have greater access to services that are respectful and effective. We will do this through FamilySmart™.
